Building a garden border fence using pallet wood to stop the dog

My dog is a chocolate Labrador, he’s friendly and playful but he’s also a bit naughty. If he disappears into the garden on his own he always seems to drift onto the borders where we want to grow flowers.

We all know that dogs love to explore, dig and wee on things but the garden borders need to be out of bounds.

During the covid lock downs we built decking in our garden. It was made from shipping pallets. It lasted about 4 years before it was knackered. So instead of chucking the good wood away, I set about repurposing it and making a small garden border fence.

I chopped the best wood into roughly 1ft lengths, I ended up with a huge pile to work with. I laid each bit side by side right along the borders to make sure that I had enough to complete the fence. The dog was getting suspicious of what I was doing!

Building the pallet wood border

Building the border fence so that it is strong isn’t that hard to do, here’s how I did it.

Step 1

Place 7 pallet wood pieces side by side, they don’t have to be the same size. Lay them on a hard flat surface this will make construction easier, pushing them against a streight edge, I used a wall. This makes sure the top lines up

Step 2

Place a cross Battern across the middle making sure you leave a couple of inches each side. Screw into each wood piece with a minimum of 2 screws. I used 40mm wood screws.

Step 3

Make some stakes using 1′ 1/2 wood cutting 45 degrees points. Make sure they are at least 6″ long then screw on them as shown below.

Step 4

Once you have your first fence built it’s time to put it in place. You may first want to dig a small trench as I did to hide the bottom of the fence as I did.

Hold the fence in the position you want it and bash it in with a heavy hammer. To avoid damage place a scrap peace of wood on top of the fence before hitting it.

Step 5

When you’ve placed the second fence next to the first you need to join them 2 together. Use a strip of wood to secure them to each other. This will make the fence a lot stronger.

That’s it just repeat the process over and over until you have as many border fences as you need.

As the wood I’ve using is fairly old it probably will not last more than a few years but that’s ok, it serves a purpose for now.
